Fields of Gold

Spring is just around the corner, so we thought we'd share this desktop wallpaper. Forget about heavy coats and fur-lined hats! It's time to start dreaming about warm sunny days, clear skies, and Spring flowers. How sweet it is!

This photograph was taken in the Jura region of France very early in the summer. The field is on private property located just outside the Cascades du Herisson natural recreation area. The overcast skies left the area in lovely, soft shade... notice the rich glow on the tops of the trees in the distance. Jay wanted to fill the frame with flowers as much as possible. He backed his rented Mercedes Benz (SWEET!) as close to the field of the flowers as he could, and then climbed onto the roof. We got some odd looks from drivers who saw us standing up there with our tripods and long lenses... but shooting from the roof of a vehicle gives you several feet of additional height. So... you do what you have to do. (Would you be willing to make a bit of a fool of yourself to get the shot you want?) ;)

We're waiting for the last of the snow to melt, here in Northern Ohio - and we hope that you have flowers and sunshine wherever you are.

Now that winter is coming, we thought we'd share this desktop wallpaper. Forget about heavy coats and fur-lined hats, and get lost in dreams of a tropical paradise. Maybe it's time to take that trip you've been putting off. Warm sun, clear water, soft sand...

This photograph was taken on Jay's first (and ONLY) trip to Dry Tortugas National Park. The island is located about 70 miles Southwest of Key West and can be reached only by a ferry or sea plane. While photographing the beautiful old fort, he happened to find a completely intact fan coral that had washed ashore. He used the fan coral as an foreground, and composed the photograph to minimize harsh shadows. He used a circular polarizer filter to cut through the glare and bring out the brilliant colors of the water. Hope you enjoy this featured download.

Today's featured background image is from right here in Ohio. I took this photograph in Cuyahoga Valley National Park a year or two ago. I hadn't planned on shooting that day, but the sky was so incredible that I packed up my gear and went out with my youngest son. He loved the walk, and I got a few photographs of our beautiful park. This will be my computer wallpaper for the next couple of weeks. :) I hope you enjoy it, too.

Featured Download: Autumn Light

Today's featured download is Jay's shot of Baxter State Park in Maine, titled "Autumn Light". We didn't have time to explore the park before sunset on that day, so we weren't sure where to set up our cameras. We noticed the light touching the tree tops along the river, and stopped to get the shot... just in time. A few more minutes, and the opportunity was gone.

Here's another downloadable shot for your collection. :) Our front lawn is now spotted with pretty yellow leaves from the River Birch outside our bedroom window. I love this time of year, not least because I know I'd better enjoy the beautiful weather while it lasts - winter is coming. I took this shot two years ago - right in our back yard. Featured Download: Finding Neverland

This week, we've chosen Jay's shot of a tall ship off the coast of Florida. Sometimes, we hike for miles and wait for hours to get the shot. Sometimes, we march through heavy drifts of snow, or wait out sand storms just to capture that spectacular sunset.

And sometimes, you get the shot while you are standing on the deck of your cruise ship with a champagne glass in your free hand. This shot was taken on a "Sunset Cruise" in Key West. The setting sun lit up the sails of the tall ship in the distance - and Jay was able to catch the warm glow against a backdrop of stunning cloud formations.

And I'm jealous. Because the cruise happened before I knew him. So I didn't get to go along.

Today, for the first time on our blog, we're featuring an image from our FREE wallpaper downloads. We have a wide variety of images available for free downloads from our websites, and we are planning to start posting one here on our blog every now and then. This shot is from Horseshoe Bend in Arizona. The shot, titled Meander, was a finalist in this year's Expose Your World competition. It was also used as one of the cover images for the Competition Winners book.
Horseshoe bend is a popular spot for landscape photographers - but make sure you bring along a wide angle lens. And if you are afraid of heights, forget it. You're looking at a drop of more than 600 meters (about 2000 ft)... no guard rails. Keep kids and pets on a tight leash. ;)
