New Photos Online

I've just finished updating my website. You'll find several new photographs in my Newest Photos gallery - including shots from Ohio, Utah, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. Nothing from West Virginia yet. I've also added our latest trips to the travel page. You can see where we've been this year, and you can see our travels from 2007 or 2006 as well. Every image on my website was taken on one of those trips - or right here in Ohio.

And now - I need to get back to work. I have stock images to process before I get to process these WV shots. I can't wait!

Everyone should take a look at Seetharam's website - he has some gorgeous work. I'm a particular fan of his bird shots - they're spectacular.

I love when you update your site! My favorites today are pictures with water (esp. "Reclaimed") but everything you have posted is gorgeous.

Thanks Audrey. "Reclaimed" is different from my usual work, but I really like it, too. I'll try to update regularly. :)

I've got a techical question Varina: On that killer image of Bryce from a couple of months ago, How did you get the "starburst" or whatever you call it on the sun. I've tried to recreate the effect without much success in photoshop.

I saw the shot on Fred Miranda's site.

I hope you know what I'm talking about.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dexter. Thanks for your kind words about my photo. The Dreaming is my favorite shot. :) Everything was perfect that day.

You could use a small aperture (f22 will work well) to create a starburst effect in-camera and without the help of Photoshop. However, in this case, I had been shooting with a larger aperture setting, and I had only a fraction of a second to capture the sun as it appeared through the tiny opening between clouds. Rather than risk missing the shot, I chose to keep my aperture as it was and add the starburst later. I did know when I took the shot that I wanted that effect, though.

So - once in PS, I tried a few different options. When I wasn't particularly pleased with the results, I decided to search for a downloadable plugin that would create a flare for me. I did a google search and came up with several thousand options. Unfortunately, I have no record of which one I chose. Still, it shouldn't be hard to find one that works for you.

Alternately, you could create the effect using this technique. It's almost identical to the flare I used for my photograph, and it will work just as well.

The key here is to create the starburst on a separate layer in PS. Place it where you want it, and then reduce the opacity until it looks natural on top of your original image. Be careful to select a color that works with your image - use the eye-dropper tool to select the color of the brightest point in your photograph, where you plan to place the burst.

Good luck! I hope this helps. I wish I could find the original brush I used. If I do find it, I'll post the link here. I hope you'll post a link or send me an email with the final version of your photo. I'd love to see it.
